Hockey fans in Timmins are getting another chance to see major junior hockey right here at home. The Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) will meet at McIntyre Arena on Wednesday, September 2, at 7 p.m.
The game will be part of both teams’ pre-season schedules as they get ready for another season in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). For local fans, it is a chance to see some of the region’s top young hockey talent before the regular season gets underway.
A Familiar Matchup for Timmins Fans
This won’t be the first time these two teams have brought their pre-season rivalry to Timmins. The Wolves and Huskies have already met here three times, making this year’s game their fourth visit.
The first matchup came in 2018, when Sudbury pulled off a thrilling 7-6 shootout victory. A year later, the Wolves returned with a more convincing 7-2 win.
Their most recent meeting was last September, when the Wolves edged the Huskies 4-3 in a shootout in front of 1,337 fans at McIntyre Arena. With such a close game last year, supporters will be hoping for another exciting night of hockey when the teams return this September.
Why Timmins?
For the two clubs, Timmins makes a natural neutral-site location. The city sits roughly halfway between Sudbury and Rouyn-Noranda, making the trip manageable for both teams while giving fans in Timmins and surrounding communities an opportunity to watch major junior hockey without travelling out of town.
The game is being organized in partnership with the Timmins Rock of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL).
Ted Gooch, president of the Timmins Rock, said the organization is excited to once again bring CHL hockey to the community.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for hockey fans throughout Timmins and the surrounding region to experience the speed, skill and excitement of CHL hockey right here in our community,” Gooch said.
He also thanked the Sudbury Wolves and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for making the exhibition game possible and helping bring another high-level hockey event to local fans.
More Than Just a Hockey Game
While fans will be coming to McIntyre Arena for the action on the ice, the event will also serve an important purpose for the Timmins Rock.
The game will act as a fundraiser for the Rock, helping support the organization and its continued commitment to Junior-A hockey and the development of young players in the community.
For local hockey supporters, that means the evening offers the best of both worlds – an exciting pre-season matchup featuring two major junior teams, while also supporting the growth of hockey in Timmins.
